“Archiving the Stalls”

http://library.brown.edu/omeka/exhibits/show/graff

“Archiving the Stalls” is an exhibit that archives the variety of communication on the walls and stalls of our public restrooms. The collection of images on display has been compiled through contributions from the public, and this project is an attempt to experiment with the crowd sourcing possibilities of the internet.

I continue to think that this project is more art-based than historical or data driven, and would like to have seen that aspect explored more. I understand the use of bathroom graffiti as an interesting choice to discover the challenges, possibilities, and limitations, of a data management tool like Omeka. More self-consciousness about that aspect of the project would have been interesting. Finally, gathering more data would have helped visitors to understand the graffiti as art or as data or as both at the same time.
